A great free video player

Typically, when you have to play videos, you would normally use Microsoft's Media Player, Real Player or some other such player. The problem with them is that either they use up a lot of system resources when running and make things slower, or they show ads if they are free, or are otherwise limited in some way.
One of the best Video Playback software that I have seen and used is called VLC Media Player, and it is totally free. Available at this website, the VLC player has a number of great features:
1. It is a free cross-platform media player
2. It supports a large number of multimedia formats, without the need for additional codecs
3. It can also be used as a streaming server, with extended features (video on demand, on the fly transcoding, ...)
4. It is extremely light-weight to use and takes minimal system resources.
