Canon’s most advanced image processor, DIGIC 4, delivers evolved Face Detection Technology that keeps every face in every photo looking its very best. The technology finds and tracks the faces of moving subjects until you’re ready to shoot, then delivers perfect focus. In addition, exposure, flash and white balance are compensated, so that faces exhibit natural skin tones and backgrounds are properly exposed.
A Face Detection Self-Timer automatically detects an increase in the number of faces and makes the appropriate adjustments. For instance, to include the photographer’s face in a group shot, there’s no need to rush in. Just put the camera on a stand or tripod, specify Face Detection Self-Timer, and the camera will wait for the photographer’s face to get on-camera before it takes the shot. Motion Detection tracks moving subjects in a much larger range--allowing you to wait for the perfect shot without refocusing.
Red-eye Correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures. 1) Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken. 2) The PowerShot SD1200 IS Digital ELPH can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback. 3) You can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them.

5 tips on buying a camera lens (contd..)

Tip 346 (Canon L series lens): When you are buying Canon lenses, sometimes you may have come across some lenses that are much more expensive, and have a thin red line at some point on the barrel of the lens. These are marked L for 'luxury', and are lens that are more sturdy, made of better material, and have a much better optical finish; but given that they are more expensive, you need to evaluate whether you have such a need.

Tip 347 (Color of great Canon telephoto lens): You must have been surprised sometime about seeing some Canon telephoto lens being white or off-white instead of black. These are the higher end telephoto lens for Canon, and are typically much more expensive.

Tip 348 (Just the red stripe on the lens not enough): So you found a lens for your Canon Digital camera, and it has a red stripe, and you are excited about getting a superior lens. However, you should assume that only if the lens is made by Canon, then a red stripe lens means that it is superior; buying a lens made by other companies with a red stripe is not reassurance of any kind.

Tip 349 (Canon low cost prime lens): Canon sells lenses in different price ranges, with the consumer plastic body lens being the most inferior. However, the prime lens in this range is still fairly decent, since these lens don't have to worry about the quality problems associated with the optics of a zoom lens.

Tip 350 (Kit lenses are on the lower scale of lenses in terms of quality): So, you are looking to buy a new Canon camera, and you find a great bargain in terms of a camera with 2 lenses, one being the typical 18-55, and the other being a lens that could be a zoom. You feel you have got a good bargain, but keep in mind that there is no such as a free lunch; the lens you got is at the bottom of the scale in terms of quality.

Customer Feedback :
Great in low light, and agree also, the bokeh is sweet. I do alot of bee chasing and manage some great macros with bees in flight with this one. All hand held. Can also take great indoor shots without flash, with a steady hand.I chose it also because it was one of the least expensive high rated canon 50mm's.
It goes well with another inexpensive canon lens, the 55-200mm ef f4.5-5.6 II, which also does well outdoors, including macro.

Sigma 50mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

Sigma launched its first standard 50mm macro lens in 1990, and followed it up with an improved model in 1998. The advent of digital SLR cameras, however, required updated optical technology and a better imaging performance. Enter the latest incarnation of the 50mm macro lens, with an improved design that corrects for various aberrations. Designed exclusively for Canon SLR cameras, this macro lens is specially coated to get the best possible color balance while cutting down on ghosting caused by reflections from the digital image sensor. The lens also includes a floating focusing system, which allows you to precisely photograph objects throughout the entire focusing range. Most importantly, this standard macro lens makes it possible to enjoy better communication with your subject. When viewing through the camera's finder, you'll be able to move the subject and make precise adjustments.

* Weight: 11.3 ounces
* Warranty: 1 year

Customer Feedback :
The lens is an excellent lens for close-up photos. I am not a professional photographer but I try really hard to get good sharp photos. This lens will do the job.
Since it is also also a 50mm lens I have used it as a normal lens. The only problem with that is that over the years many of us have been spoiled with zoom lenses. With a zoom lens you can stand in one spot and zoom the lens in or out to get closer or father from your subject. With just the 50mm capability of this lens you have to physically move in or out to get a closer shot or a wider shot. This is not necessarily a criticism, just a comment about how we have been spoiled by zoom lenses.
I do not believe you will be disappointed with this lens. The price is great for the quality.

Canon EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

The Canon EF 28-105mm standard zoom lens retains the optical capability of Canon's previous EF 28-105mm USM lens but with a refined exterior design. The lens is distinguished by a ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM) drive that provides silent, high-speed autofocusing, along with full-time manual focusing. The 1.6-foot close-focusing distance, meanwhile, lets you take great close-up portraits and nature shots. A good match for the Canon EOS A2/A2e or ELAN 7 series cameras with built-in flashes, the EF 28-105mm lens is an excellent zoom lens for everyday use. The lens carries a one-year warranty.

Technical Details :
* 28-105mm standard zoom lens with f/3.5-4.5 maximum aperture for Canon SLR cameras.
* Ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM) provides silent, high-speed autofocusing.
* 1.6-foot close focusing distance; rotating zoom system; 58mm filter size.
* Ideal for Canon EOS A2/Aw3 or ELAN 7 series cameras with built-in flashes.
* Measures 2.8 inches in diameter and 3 inches long; weighs 13.2 ounces.

Specifications :
* Focal length: 28-105mm
* Maximum aperture: 1:3.5-4.5
* Lens construction: 15 elements in 12 groups
* Diagonal angle of view: 75 to 23 degrees (at 30 feet)
* Focus adjustment: Inner focusing system with USM
* Closest focusing distance: 1.6 feet
* Zoom system: Rotating type
* Filter size: 58mm
* Dimensions: 2.8 inches in diameter, 3 inches long
* Weight: 13.2 ounces

Customer Feedback :
I am very satisfied with the overall performance of 28-105 mm. It focuses instantly and silently. USM is definitely an advantage and that was one of the reasons why I preferred Canon over other brands. The high pitched sound associated with focusing becomes quite irritating even at occasions when you do not need a silent operation. With a USM lens you do not hear anything and this is really fascinating. This lens produces very clear photos and is definitely better than the Canon EF 28-90 lens which is usually sold with the body for three reasons: 1. The grip feels much better. 2. The lens provides a larger aperture at longer focal lenghts. 3. Basically it has a focal length of 28-105 mm (vs 28-90). Even if there is a significant price difference I would suggest the 28-105 mm. You will NOT regret it.

Customer Feedback :
This lens is designed specifically for digital cameras. (Digital cameras are different from film cameras in several respects). For example, a digital camera uses what amounts to a big chip to gather light, the surface of the chip is far more reflective than film. This means bright light can hit the chip and some of it bounce back into the lens. HOWEVER, you cannot use this lens with a film camera, or you will get dark fading around the edges of the photo.
Also, this lens is designed specifically for cameras with a CMOS or CCD chip no larger than 15.5 to 23.2mm

Customer Feedback :
I have an older version of this lens for my Nikon and always got good results with it. I am using this on a Canon 5D Mk2, believe it or not, and it is great so far. Some barrel distortion that really shows in building shots, etc, but there is good software that can correct that easily. Also, it will be less on non-full frame cameras. Otherwise I think this is one of the best value lenses out there. Probably the ideal travel lens due to it's size, too. It's very small. Maybe the smallest zoom lens of that length. It's also very well made. Mostly metal. I trued out the Canon equivalent and have to say this lens seems sharper and with better color.

Customer Feedback :
I LOVE this lens. I got it for shooting sporting events for my university newspaper, and have had no problems in the month that I've had it. It autofocuses faster than the Tamron. A monopod isn't necessary because it's such a fast lens. Even at night with stadium lighting, the AF has little trouble.
The best thing I've heard for people wanting to shoot sports since buying this "cheap copy" lens came from a professional on the sidelines the firtst time I used my new lens. He said to my question about the Nikon 70-200mm, "Honestly, I turn the VR off when I'm not doing still portrait shots because it gets out of whack when I start following a moving person."

Customer Feedback :
This is a serious lens. It is big and heavy and takes fantastic pictures. The image stabilization gets you an extra stop when shooting handheld, in that it minimizes shake enough. I've taken some spectacular twilight shots using this feature. It is a fantastic lens. Great sharpness, clarity, no spectral flares that I've noticed-- none at all-- quick, completely silent autofocus. Reasonably fast lens, the image stabilizer effectively makes it a little faster.
The only problem that I've had with the image stabilizer is that it sometimes makes it hard to frame up parallel lines at the edges of photos.

Customer Feedback :
It is a perfect everyday lens especially well suited to photograph outdoor events where there is close and far action. It is made of light plastic which makes it easy to carry but I would not want to drop it - especially when extended to 300mm. Overall I am very satisfied with my purchase.
The focus speed is slower than my D50's kit lens and it is also noisyer, but not annoying. The only odd fuction is the manual focus; the internal gears do not disengage so you feel the gears whirring as you turn the focus ring, it feels a bit rough. The Nikon model of this lens does not have a manual focus switch on the lens, you have to use the camera body switch.
A bonus with this lens is that is does good macro photography. I was able to get sharp shots of flowers at close range with totally blurred backgrouds.

Customer Feedback :
The new lens is better in the corners and flares less but the corners are still a little soft at f2.8 and you can get the lens to flare a little if you try. I haven't seen the loss of clarity above 20mm that others reported. There is a slight difference in eyelashes if you did a lot of portraits but this is probably not the best choice for a portrait lens. It is a somewhat better lens for shooting landscapes and other shots where edge to edge clarity is important.

Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens

Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Medium Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

A highly practical medium telephoto lens with superb delineation and portability, the Canon EF 85mm lens produces sharp and clear images at all apertures. Through computer simulations, the lens has been designed to give beautiful background blur, thereby bringing your subject into crisp view. The ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM) and fast f/1.8 aperture, meanwhile, helps the subject zip into focus in the viewfinder. And because the front lens group does not rotate during focusing, special filter effects are not affected. Best of all, the standard zoom lens--with its natural angle of view and perspective--captures the subject plainly, making it excellent for portraits and images that require a natural depth of field. As with all Canon lenses, the lens carries a one-year warranty.

PROS:
- I'm a fan of Steven Soderbergh and love how he made it look like he shot Ocean's Eleven with natural light. I wanted the same effects for my get-together photographs and boy did I get them! I shoot mainly in RAW now and apply the Tungsten filter when I import them into CS2 and they look phenomenal!
- After correction, skin tones look very natural and the lighting makes the captured moment look like a captured moment. Not a forced moment like when a blazingly bright flash is involved.
- The bokeh on this lens is dramatic, not distracting.
- The 85mm is solid. Compared to my XT kit lens, the 85mm feels like a 'real' lens with solid movement and loads of glass inside.
- The shooting distance is very comfortable for your subjects, as they do not feel like you're crowding them with your camera.

CON(just one!):
- Sorry, this is not really a con, but more of a warning mostly to other amateurs out there who may be looking at this for the price. It may be pretty obvious to most, but this lens does not feature a zoom range. Meaning if you want your subject's head to look bigger in your viewfinder, you must walk towards them or have them come closer to you. Conversely, if you want them smaller in the VF, you must walk away from them etc...since this was my first fixed lens, I had to get used to it a bit. This is not the lens for you if you want to take group photos in low light situations in small room.

Customer Feedback :
I have been using this lens for a week and getting absolutely flawless pictures - no flares, fringing etc. I also did some semi-controlled tests with Image Stablizer and it works as advertised, resulting in much sharper pics indoors. USM focusing works great too, and the lens is/feels well built.
One gripe - at the price mentioned, I would have liked it to come with a hood ("sold" separately but not available yet) and a case (also "sold" separately).

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 Image Stabilized USM SLR Lens for EOS Digital SLR's

Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Digital SLR Lens for EOS Digital SLR Cameras

Bring small things into full-sized view with the Canon EF 60mm macro USM lens. Macro lenses can uncover detail that would be impossible to detect by the eye and give new perspective to extremely minute subjects such as insects or the petals of a small flower, and this lens is no exception. The 60mm lens offers an angle of view that's equivalent to a 96mm lens on a 35mm camera, along with a floating optical system that can focus down to life-size 1:1 magnification. The inner focusing system, meanwhile, is driven by a silent and powerful ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM), meaning the lens's overall length never changes during focus. Ultimately, the multi-purpose lens is equally at home shooting macro shots, portraits, or available-light photos. Like all Canon EF-S lenses, this lens is restricted to the EOS 20D, EOS Digital Rebel, and EOS Digital Rebel XT cameras.

Technical Details :
* 60mm macro lens with f/2.8 maximum aperture for EOS digital SLR cameras.

* Closest focusing distance: 0.65 feet
* Filter size: 52mm
* Dimensions: 2.9 inches in diameter, 2.8 inches long
* Weight: 11.8 ounces

Customer Feedback :
I very rarely have any unsharp pictures with this lens unless it is my own fault by trying to use too slow of a shutter speed without a tripod.
I also have the 180mm f/3.5L Macro Lens, which costs about 3 times more than this lens, and although it is very clear and the extra reach is nice at times especially since it can be used with both the 1.4X and 2X TC's, it is very difficult to use inside without a tripod. The 60mm can be handheld if needed with very good results even if you have to bump your ISO up a little to do so.
I have also used this lens for both inside and outside portrait work with very nice results. All-in-all, given it's small size and light weight I very rarely leave this lens behind when I go out because you never know when you might see a great macro shot.

This is a solid telephoto zoom for the amateur photographer. The only drawbacks with this lens is the zoom control, which could be smoother; filter rotation to the front (but that's standard in this price range); lack of lens hood.

5 tips on buying a camera lens (contd..)

Tip 1 (What are Canon's EF vs. EF-S lens): Deciphering what the acronyms written for the lens mean can be confusing for people who don't know what they mean. Till 2003, all the lens prepared by Canon were called EF (electrofocus); however, in 2003, Canon introduced the Digital Rebel series of cheaper DSLR's. For this new camera, there was a new lens introduced that was known as EF-S. All new Canon digital cameras are EF and EF-S compatible. However, the main difference between the EF and the EF-S lens are that EF-S lens have smaller mirror boxes, and smaller sensors. The EF-S lens work with the current range of Digital SLR's, but because of their smaller sensors, they will not work with any full frame cameras that Canon releases.

Tip 2 (Same lens works differently on film and digital cameras): Consider the above case again, where the EF lens will work on both film and digital cameras. However, the EF lens on a film camera will show more of the scene that a digital camera (except for a full frame digital camera).

Tip 3 (When the lens has the term full frame equivalent or 35mm equivalent): This term refers to the fact that most digital cameras have a sensor that is smaller than on a film camera, and as result, there is a factor known as the cropping factor. So a digital camera with a cropping factor of 1.6 will mean that a lens with a 60mm focal length will actually be the same as a lens of 96mm focal length on a film camera. Keep this calculation in mind when deciding to purchase a lens.

Tip 4 (Read the focal lenghts printed on the lens and the box): Many times, people are confused when they read all the acronyms printed on the lens (and on the lens box). One of these acronyms refers to the focal length, so a lens with the text 80-200mm refers to a zoom lens with the focal lenght between 80mm and 200mm

Tip 5 (Aperture printed on the lens): Lens also have the aperture printed on them. If you don't have a high end lens, it is likely that your lens will not have the same maximum aperture at all zoom lengths, it is more likely that your zoom lens has the following text: 1:2.8-4.5. This means that the lens will have an aperture opening of 1/2.8 at the mimimum zoom, and 4.5 at the highest zoom, which means that you will have less light, and is certainly not a fast lens.

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens for Canon DSLR Cameras

Designed to meet consumer demands for a fast EF-S zoom lens, the EF-S 17-55mm offers image quality on par with Canon's highly regarded L-series lenses. The lens features a large circular aperture that produces a shallow depth of field, creating background blur that draws special attention to the photographic subject. The lens construction, meanwhile, includes UD and aspherical elements that deliver impressive image quality throughout the entire zoom range. And thanks to the Image Stabilizer lens groups--which shift to compensate for camera shake--the image appears crisp and clear on the image plane, eve in dim light. Finally, the lens offers a ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM), inner focusing, and new AF algorithms to help achieve autofocus quickly and quietly, along with full-time mechanical manual focusing that makes it possible to manually adjust the focus even in AF mode.

Technical Details :
* 17-55mm wide-angle zoom lens with f/2.8 maximum aperture for Canon DSLR cameras.
* AD and aspherical elements deliver impressive image quality through entire zoom range.
* Image Stabilizer lens groups shift to compensate for image shake even in dim lighting.
* Large circular aperture produces shallow depth of field; ring-type ultra-sonic monitor (USM).
* Measures 3.3 inches in diameter and 4.4 inches long; weighs 22.8 ounces; 1-year warranty.

To meet user demands for a fast EF-S zoom lens, Canon has specially designed a new lens with a large aperture of f/2.8 for select Canon Digital SLR cameras. The large circular aperture produces a shallow depth-of-field, creating background blur that draws attention to the photographic subject. The lens construction includes UD and aspherical elements, which deliver impressive image quality throughout the entire zoom range. Image Stabilizer lens groups shift to compensate for camera movement so that the image appears steady on the image plane, ensuring clear, crisp images, even in dim light. With a Ring-type USM, inner focusing and new AF algorithms, this lens achieves autofocus quickly and quietly, and with full-time mechanical manual focusing, manually adjusting the focus is possible even in AF mode.

FEATURES :
* Focal length: 17-55mm
* Maximum aperture: f/2.8
* Lens construction: 19 elements in 12 groups
* Diagonal angle of view: 78 degrees (at 30 feet) to 27 degrees (at 50 feet)
* Focus adjustment: AF with full-time manual
* Closest focusing distance: 1.15 feet
* Zoom system: 5-group helical zoom (front group moves 27mm)
* Filter size: 77mm
* Dimensions: 3.3 inches in diameter, 4.4 inches long
* Weight: 22.8 ounces

CUSTOMER FEEDBACK :
This lens focuses fast and sure--even in low light, no hunting around to lock onto a subject. Pictures taken with the camera hand-held at 1/10 to 1/15 sec shutter speeds inside with no flash were tack-sharp (Thanks to the IS). With F2.8 and IS, this lens opens up a whole new world of natural low-light photography. Not only are more inside shots possible, you also have the versatility to create gorgeous bokeh. You create these bokeh effects generally zoomed to 55mm (where the kit lens' max aperture is F5.6). Since the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 has a constant F2.8 max aperature, you don't have to worry about the depth of field increasing as you zoom. It is so confidence-inspiring to walk around and set your aperture where you want it to give you the depth of field you want, and not really worry about the shutter speed being too slow.
