A
blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a
sign which said: 'I am blind, please help.'
There were only a few coins in the hat. A man was walking by. He took a few
coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign,
turned it around, and wrote some words.
He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.
Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind
boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things
were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, 'Were you the one who changed
my sign this morning? What did you write?'
The man said, 'I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different
way.' What he had written was: 'Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it.'
Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?
Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply
said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that
they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more
effective?
Moral of the Story: Be thankful for what you have.
Be creative...
Be innovative...
Think differently and positively.
Invite others towards good with wisdom. Live life with no excuse and love with
no regrets. When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have
1000 reasons to smile. Face your past without regret. Handle your present with
confidence.. Prepare for the future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the
fear.
Great men say, 'Life has to be an incessant process of repair and
reconstruction, of discarding evil and developing goodness.... In the journey
of life, if you want to travel without fear, you must have the ticket of a good
conscience.'
The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling...
And even more beautiful is, knowing that you are the reason behind it!!!
At the prodding of my friends, I am writing this
story. My name is Mildred Hondorf. I am a former elementary school music teacher
from Des Moines , Iowa . I've always
supplemented my income by teaching piano lessons - something I've done for over
30 years. Over the years I found that
children have many levels of musical ability.
I've never had the pleasure of having a prodigy though I have taught
some talented students. However I've
also had my share of what I call 'musically challenged' pupils.
One such student was Michael. Michael was 11 years old when his mother (a
single Mom) dropped him off for his first piano lesson. I prefer that students (especially boys)
begin at an earlier age, which I explained to Michael. But Michael said that it had always been his
mother's dream to hear him play the piano.
So I took him as a student. Well, Michael began with his piano lessons
and from the beginning I thought it was a hopeless endeavor. As much as Michael tried, he lacked the sense
of tone and basic rhythm needed to excel.
But he dutifully reviewed his scales and some elementary pieces that I
require all my students to learn.
Over the months he tried and tried while I listened and
cringed and tried to encourage him. At
the end of each weekly lesson he'd always say, "My mom's going to hear me
play someday."
But it seemed hopeless.
He just did not have any inborn ability.
I only knew his mother from a distance as she dropped Michael off or
waited in her aged car to pick him up.
She always waved and smiled but never stopped in.
Then one day Michael stopped coming to our lessons. I thought about calling him but assumed
because of his lack of ability, that he had decided to pursue something
else. I also was glad that he stopped
coming -- he was a bad advertisement for my teaching!
Several weeks later I mailed to the student's homes a
flyer on the upcoming recital. To my
surprise Michael (who received a flyer) asked me if he could be in the recital.
I told him that the recital was for current pupils and
because he had dropped out he really did not qualify.
He said that his mother had been sick and unable to take
him to piano lessons but he was still practicing. "Miss Hondorf, I've just got to
play!" he insisted.
I don't know what led me to allow him to play in the
recital. Maybe it was his persistence or
maybe it was something inside of me saying that it would be all right.
The night for the recital came. The high school gymnasium was packed with
parents, friends and relatives.
I put Michael up last in the program before I was to come
up and thank all the students and play a finishing piece. I thought that any damage he would do would
come at the end of the program and I could always salvage his poor performance
through my 'curtain closer'.
Well, the recital went off without a hitch. The students had been practicing and it
showed. Then Michael came up on
stage. His clothes were wrinkled and his
hair looked like he'd run an eggbeater through it. "Why didn't he dress up like the other
students?" I thought. "Why
didn't his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night?"
Michael pulled out the piano bench and he began. I was surprised when he announced that he had
chosen Mozart's Concerto #21 in C Major.
I was not prepared for what I heard next.
His fingers were light on the keys, they even danced
nimbly on the ivories.
He went from pianissimo to fortissimo. From allegro to virtuoso. His suspended chords that Mozart demands were
magnificent! Never had I heard Mozart
played so well by a person his age.
After six and a half minutes he ended in a grand
crescendo and everyone was on their feet in wild applause.
Overcome and in tears I ran up on stage and put my arms
around Michael in joy. "I've never
heard you play like that Michael! How'd
you do it?"
Through the microphone Michael explained: "Well Miss
Hondorf, remember I told you my Mom was sick?
Well, actually she had cancer and passed away this morning and
well... She was born deaf so tonight was
the first time she ever heard me play. I
wanted to make it special."
There wasn't a dry eye in the house that evening.
As the people from Social Services led Michael from the
stage to be placed into foster care, I noticed that even their eyes were red
and puffy, and I thought to myself how much richer my life had been for taking
Michael as my pupil.
No, I've never had a prodigy but that night I became a
prodigy -- of Michael's! He was the
teacher and I was the pupil for it is he that taught me the meaning of
perseverance and love and believing in yourself and maybe even taking a chance
in someone and you don't know why.
A classic book by William Makepeace Thackeray, a satire about society in Victorian times, around the time of Napoleon, and contrasts the tale of 2 women, one of whom will do anything to get what she wants, and the other one, who is honest, believing, and trusts people even when they are not to be trusted. A review of this book (link to article):
The title of the book, Vanity Fear, is taken from an earlier work, John Bunyan's allegorical story The Pilgrim's Progress, published long before in 1678, and supposed to represent a place called Vanity, where there is a ongoing fair that is meant to represent man's attachment to worldly things, and supposed to represent the sin of man. The book was seen as a bitter satire of society, as showcased in the quest of one of the anti-hero (or anti-heroine, to be more accurate), who is cunning, and uses all her qualities to work her way up in life.
Gharonda (link to complete article) was a movie released in 1977, and starring Amol Palekar, Zarina Wahab, and Shreeram Lagoo. It had a storyline that caught the despair of human relations, for the quest for getting one's own house, and what all people can do to get what they want. In the end, the situation turns out different from what one initially plans, and then you accept what life has handed. The movie had some excellent music by Jaidev, with lyrics by Gulzar, and singing by 2 singers who are not so widely known - Bhupinder and Runa Laila. Songs such as 'ek akela is shahar mein' and 'do deewane is shahar mein' were incredible songs.
Jane Austen wrote many books, with her most famous books being Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), and Mansfield Park (1814). Emma came after these 3, and has taken its time to become famous. Further, since Jane Austen chose to write her books anonymously, her books started becoming famous long after her death, with a biography by her nephew, written more than 50 years after her death, that awoke more interest in her. It was only in the early half of the 20th century that she started being acknowledged as a classical writer, and now her works are very famous. Jane Austen remained unmarried, dying at the relatively young age of 42, from an affliction that was not particularly known at that time, but which is now suspected to be Addison's disease or Hodgkin's lymphoma. Like her other works, Emma was also a critique of the society of that time, where a woman's standing was supposed to be based on marriage, and it would be this marriage that would decide her economic and social security; even though her works have a strong touch of comedy to them.
Emma is essentially a novel that describes the life of a 21 year old girl called 'Emma Woodhouse'. She is not worried about finances, being comfortably off; however, she starts to believe that she is good at match-making and guiding who should marry whom, something that causes a lot of temporary changes in the lives of people around her; in the end, however, everybody settles down happily, including her. There are a number of characters in the novel, and you will need to read carefully to ensure that you don't miss any of the turns and twists of the story. Emma lives with her father, and has just returned from the marriage of her former governess Miss Taylor, and since she had introduced Miss Taylor to her husband, Emma feels that she has a gift for match-making. One of her closest friends is a person called George Knightley, who is from the neighboring estate, as well as the brother of her sister Isabelle's husband. He is perhaps the only one who is able to criticize actions taken by Emma when he feels that she is wrong. Who is the first person on whom Emma tries out this ability of hers ? It is her new friend, the 17 year old Harriet Smith, who is very sweet, but not very bright. And here starts the main story. Harriet has got a proposal from a rich farmer called Mr. Martin, but Emma has decided that Mr. Martin is not good enough for Harriet, she would be more suited to the local vicar, Mr. Elton. And then, the unthinkable as per Emma happens - Mr. Elton realizes that Emma is a better catch, and proposes to Emma. Her friends had realized that this would happen, but not Emma. When Emma tries to direct Mr. Elton to Harriet, Mr. Elton makes it plain that he considers Harriet below him, and leaves the place for a while. The story introduces more characters, and spins around the lives and marriages of these folks, and is fairly interesting.
What can one say about this movie ? I really liked this movie, although the huge number of songs got to me sometime in the middle. The movie is a sensitive portrayal of the triangle, with the girl in the middle, and you see how her emotions slowly change as she gets to know the person to whom she is married to. The movie was a big hit for Sanjay Leela Bhansali, since his earlier movie, Khamoshi, was a critical success, but did not do too well at the box office. The success of Hum Dil De Chukhe Hain Sanam propelled Sanjay Leela Bhansali into the big league, and encouraged him to make his mega opus, Devdas. HDDCS also gave a big boost to the career and reputation of its heroine, Aishwarya Rai. Before this, Aishwarya did not have a great reputation an a star who could emote well, and a role where she had an opportunity to show a range of emotions was something that she would have welcomed. The success of the movie gave her reputation a big boost, something that her male stars (Salman Khan and Ajay Devgun) did not get to the same extent.
The movie is about a unique triangle. Aishwarya lives in a joint family in the Rann of Kutch, one which is very musically inclined as her father is a famed classical musical Pandit, and at the same time, protective of their honour. Aishwarya is the favorite daughter of her father, who is strict otherwise. And then comes in Salman Khan to their mansion, to learn music from her father. He has come all the way from Italy for this purpose. Initially, Nandini (Aishwarya) does not like Salman, also because she had to give up her room for him, and they play a lot of pranks on each other. But, as you would expect, soon they start to love each other, fairly deeply. For some time, this love is hidden, but at one point, her father, Pandit Darbar (Vikram Gokhale) finds out about this love affair. He is not the least bit supportive, and asks Salman to leave (his gift to his teacher), and orders Nandini to forget Salman, as she is to marry other. And then Nandini is married off to Vanraj (Ajay Devgun); Vanraj had seen Nandini at a function and fell in love with her. However, immediately after the marriage, Vanraj gets to know about the love that Nandini had for Sameer (Salman Khan) and promises to take her to Italy to be with Sameer (after the initial anger). They arrive in Italy, and as you might expect, searching for a person in a different country is not easy; they run into various issues, getting robbed once, and Nandini gets shot during the attempt. Vanraj takes care of her when she is in hospital, and slowly Nandini starts to start seeing Vanraj for the caring and loving person he is. Eventually they find Sameer through his mother (Helen), and when Salman finds out, he is overjoyed. It is at this time that Nandini has to decide, is she still in love with Sameer, or is she now conscious of her role as Vanraj's wife, and now in love with him ?

Wuthering Heights is a classic of the Victorian Era, written by Emily Bronte (and released in 1847). This was the only work of fiction by Emily, although her more famous sister, Charlotte Bronte wrote many more works of fiction (including the very famous Jane Eyre). Wuthering Heights was released not under the name of Emily, but under a pseudonym of Ellis Bell (because there was a prejudice in society that time directed at female writers, and Charlotte was also writing under a different name). Emily died the next year, in 1848, and a second edition was released later in 1850, edited by Charlotte. Emily had a relatively short life, and lived only from 1818 to 1848, dying after contracting tuberculosis. Wuthering Heights was not a great hit when it came out, given that depiction of relationships and am over-riding sense of revenge and cruelty ran through the book. However, over the years, the book has come to become much more respected, and is now considered a literary classic, with many considering it superior to Jane Eyre.
The narrative is essentially about how emotions can guide the behavior of a person, with feelings of rejection and hatred making a person spend his entire life in revenge, tormenting people, seeking to get revenge. It is also a tale of unrequited love, with the passionate love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw (a love that had a tragic ending) causing Heathcliff to spend his entire life in how to get revenge. The narrative jumps a bit between the present and past, and is presented by 2 characters - Mr. Lockwood and Ellen "Nelly" Dean, with the main setting of the novel starting in the year 1801. The novel starts with Heathcliff, a young homeless orphan is brought to Wuthering Heights by Mr. Earnshaw, and raised like another son. Heathcliff makes very close friends with the daughter, Catherine, although her brother, Hindley, does not like Heathcliff and mistreats him. After the death of Earnshaw, Hindley takes over as owner of Wuthering Heights, and badly treats Heathcliff. In the meanwhile, Catherine becomes close to a neighbor, Edgar Linton, something that Heathcliff does not like. He dislikes Linton. Hindley's wife dies, and Hindley is in despair, taking on heavy drinking; around this time, Catherine decides to marry Linton, something that will profoundly affect Heathcliff. When Heathcliff leaves after feeling that Catherine considers it degrading to marry him, Catherine is struck by a fever, and Edgar Linton takes care of her, and in a couple of years, they get married. And then Heathcliff returns, having suddenly turned very wealthy, and intent on taking revenge on all those who prevented him from being with his love. He lends to Hindley, and then takes over Wuthering Heights after Hindley dies; further, he elopes with Linton's sister, Isabella, all for revenge. However, soon after, Catherine dies, with her and Heathcliff being reconciled just before her death. Heathcliff becomes more angry, and hate prone, carrying on his hate onto the various children, Hindley's son Hareton, his own son Linton, and Catherine's and Edgar's daughter, also called Catherine. What will happen next, since eventually Isabella and Edgar Linton also die, leaving the various children at Heathcliff's mercy.
Ijaazat means permission, and the name of the movie is based on the concept of the heroine having taking a drastic step without consulting with her husband, something that she would regret later. The movie is a very well regarded movie, based on alternative cinema. The movie is also very well known for its songs (shown later in this post), and is also distinctive that the movie gave a chance for Asha Bhosle to showcase her quite tremendous singing talents, since she sang the 4 main songs of the movie. These songs are all incredibly famous, and regarded as excellent songs both in terms of music and lyrics. The music of the film won 2 national awards. The movie did give a boost to the reputations of both Naseeruddin Shah and Rekha, although the commercial success of such a movie is always debatable. The movie was directed by Gulzar (also the lyrics, screenplay and dialogues), with music by RD Burman.
1988 - National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer: Asha Bhosle - Mera Kuch Samaan 1988 - National Film Award for Best Lyrics: Gulzar - Mera Kuch Samaan 1989 - Filmfare Best Lyricist Award: Gulzar
The movie works in mostly flashback mode. Mahinder (Naseeruddin Shah), on a stormy night, gets into a train waiting room; a lady sitting in the waiting room tries to avoid being seen, but eventually they meet. The lady is Sudha (Rekha), and when they see each other, the flashback starts. They were married to each other earlier, but that relationship broke because of the presence of another girl in Mahinder's life. Mahinder used to love a girl called Maya (Anuradha Patel), a free living feminist. However, it was impossible for Mahinder to marry her since his grandfather (Shammi Kapoor) would never have allowed this. His grandfather had found Sudha, a school teacher, for him, and even though the engagement has stretched to 5 years, it was pretty clear that the marriage could happen anytime. This was something that Mahinder told Sudha about as well, with the understanding that Maya would never come between them. However, it seemed to Sudha that Maya had such an important part in Mahinder's life that her presence was always there. The situation escalates, till there is a time when Sudha feels that Mahinder has deserted her for Maya and she laves without telling Mahinder. In the meantime, when Mahinder gets to know, he suffers a heart attack, with Maya taking care of him. Soon after, Maya dies when her scarf gets entangled in the wheel of the motorcycle that she was driving. In the present time, when Sudha gets to know these events, she is shocked, since it would seem to be that she had left without ascertaining the complete facts, and this had changed her life. And then her husband, Shashi Kapoor comes in, and she leaves with him, this time taking the permission (Ijaazat) of Mahinder, unlike the previous time.

Cancer patients have been known to have higher chances of having depression, to the extent that many medical facilities provide counselling along with cancer treatment. It has always been accepted that cancer treatment and the pain resulting from the disease leads to the patient feeling depresses; of course, treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy with stiff side-effects can also cause more depression. However, a study has determined that the cancer actually produces chemicals that lead to depression (link to article):
"Our research shows that two types of tumour-induced molecules, one secreted by the immune system and another by the stress axis, may be responsible," said Leah Pyter, a postdoctoral fellow and lead author of a paper. "Both of these substances have been implicated in depression, but neither has been examined over time frames and magnitudes that are characteristic of chronic diseases such as cancer," she added. The results also showed that the rats with tumours had increased levels of cytokines in their blood and in the hippocampus (the portion of the brain that regulates emotion) when compared with healthy rats. Cytokines are produced by the immune system, and an increase in cytokines has been linked to depression. The team also found that stress hormone production also was altered in rats with tumours. The rats with tumours also had dampened production of the stress hormone corticosterone.
The study has been conducted in rats so far, but the fact is, if a study can conclusively determine that cancer does indeed medically lead to depression, there will be a greater focus on emotional counselling during treatment, something that should help the patient.
