Cancer research: Soyabeans good for you
For a long time now, it has always been suggested that food items containing soyabeans are essential food items to be part of a regular diet, such as having soyabean milk, and so on. Now, a research points out that soyabeans contain chemicals with anti-oxidants that help the body against cardiovascular diseases and cancer (link to article):
Soybeans contain high levels of several health-beneficial compounds including tocopherols which have antioxidant properties and can be used in the treatment or prevention of heart disease and cancer. It has been suggested that all tocopherols could play a role in cardiovascular diseases and cancer prevention.

Diabetes research: Drink tea regularly
The drinking of tea has always been associated with having developed a taste for it. There are regions in the world where tea drinking is more common, and there are regions in the world where coffee is more popular. As regards the health benefits of tea, opinion in the past has been mixed, with a lot of research pointing out benefits of green tea, but not specifically that of the normal everyday black tea. Now, research based on statistical methods (not scientific evidence of ingredients, but an analyis based on numbers - although such methods are a good starting point for doing research) reveals that people drinking upto 3 cups of tea a day reduce their risk of developing diabetes by half (link to article):
After analyses, boffins discovered that chemicals found in all types of tea cut the dangers of developing type 2diabetes by 42 per cent. Drinking more than three cups did not reduce the risk any further, reports The Daily Express. The team concluded: "Consumption of at least three cups of tea and/or coffee was associated with a lowered risk of type 2 diabetes. Blood pressure and intake of magnesium, potassium and caffeine did not explain these associations."
Instead, the beneficial effects in tea were probably explained by "flavonoid antioxidants" which are found in every cup.

Health tip - Burberries help keep the brain fit
It is a normal situation, where the human mind gets more tired as the day progresses. So, as a person goes from morning to afternoon to evening, the person gets progressively loses the sharpness of mind, and attention. So, people try all sorts of mechanisms to retain that sharpness during the day, with coffee being one mechanism, getting some siesta or sleep during the day being another. Now, in some research, it is being found that Blueberries can play a vital role in ensuring that memory and concentration remains sharp many hours later. Now, once such a product comes into the market, it would be a hot seller (link to article)
Researchers found that a large helping of the fruit - described by some as nature’s ‘superfood’ - boosts concentration and memory up to five hours later. The study, reported at the British Science Festival, also claims that blueberry can help fight dementia in the long term. British scientists who made the discovery believe the antioxidants in blueberries stimulate the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain - and keep the mind fresh.
The results were repeated with another group of 40 volunteers, this time pensioners. He said that he was now concentrating on the long term effects of eating blueberries and particularly their effect on the hippocampus, the part of the brain related to memory.
Imagine, getting a product advertised as a natural, smooth, and tasty way to keep the brain refreshed. It would become a natural addition to offices and colleges all over.

Diabetes research - Milk can combat some paths that lead to diabetes
Diabetes is more of a lifestyle disease, increasing rapidly among the population, as people become more sedentary, and the quality and quantity of food they eat becomes richer. As a result, people develop more lifestyle diseases such as one called metabolic syndrome where people with a higher level of obesity, glucose, and high blood pressure stand a very high risk of developing cardiovascular problems, and also diabetes.
On a different note, milk is a universal recommendation for people of all ages, and supposed to provide a number of important nutrients to the body. The study points out the important role of chemicals found inside milk in the fight against diabetes. Read more about this article here (link)
Researchers from Victoria's Department of Primary Industries and MG Nutritionals found that a compound, known as Regeneration Inducing Peptide for Tissues and Cells (RIPTAC), when given daily to mice, caused them not only to build more muscle but also want to exercise.

Foods that make you feel full
The most important control on how much you eat is an internal signal of the body. At some point in your meal, you will start feeling full, and that is the point when most people will end the meal (exceptions are when somebody is really enjoying the meal and eats more than the 'full' feeling, or when they are on a diet and eat less than the 'full' feeling). People who are looking to maintain a good health or to lose weight find it critial to eat more food items that seem to make them feel full faster. Here is an article (link) that details 10 such food items:
Fatty fish
Citrus Fruits
Green Vegetables
Popcorn
Oatmeal
Almond and Walnuts
Low-fat dairy products
Beans
Whole Grains
Apples
For many of them, you would have already heard about these items being part of a good diet.

Is there a wrong time to eat ?
For long, people have been told that you should eat properly, eat at correct intervals, give enough time between dinner and when you go to sleep, and other such health tips. A lot of them get dis-regarded like many other health tips. However, research is showing that the time periods when you eat can have an effect on obesity / the tendency to put on weight. Such research would be very relevant to people who work hours where their food timings are unbalanced, such as people who get off a late shift, and then have to compress their dinner and sleep timings (link to article):
Late-night snackers are more likely to gain weight, research suggests. A team from Northwestern University, Illinois, found that when you eat, not just how you eat, could make a big difference. Scientists found that when mice ate at unusual hours, they put on twice as much weight, despite exercising and eating as much as others.
The findings may have implications for people worried about their weight.
"How or why a person gains weight is very complicated, but it is clearly not just calories in and calories out," said Fred Turek, from the Northwestern's Center for Sleep and Circadian Biology, where the research took place. The scientists now hope they can find out more about how the process works. It is thought that sleep, hormones and body temperature all play a part in how we gain weight.
Given that the study was carried out on mice (even though mice are the standard test bed for such research), it would take more research to see the applicability of such a study on humans. However, overall, eating on a regular pattern has always been claimed to be beneficial to health.

Vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage are good for the heart
From childhood, we have been told to eat our vegetables; in today's world, with this fast paced life, the temptation to eat junk food is pretty high. Junk food such as chips, burgers, pizzas, fries, etc present an excellent taste to the human palate, and give a good feeling; however, they are certainly not good for the human health, and can contribute to diseases such as diabetes, high Blood Pressure and heart problems. What is the solution ? The solution is to back to the cooked food that you have been told to eat, and eat stuff such as broccole, cabbage, and other green vegetables in the recommended quantities. These are good for your heart, and prevent the build up inside arteries that can cause heart attacks (link to article):
Here’s why broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower are good for the heart – a chemical found in these vegetables can boost a natural defence mechanism to protect arteries from disease. The Imperial College London team has shown that a protein that usually protects against plaque build up called Nrf2 is inactive in areas of arteries that are prone to disease.
Treatment with a chemical found in green "brassica" vegetables such as broccoli can activate Nrf2 in these disease-prone regions. "Sulforaphane is found naturally in broccoli, so our next steps include testing whether simply eating broccoli, or other vegetables in their ''family'', has the same protective effect.
There is ongoing research going on in this area, but if the scientists can conclusively show that eating vegetables such as broccoli and cabbage is good for the heart, then it is easier to popularize the consumption of such vegetables.

Mediterranean diet helps in the fight against diabetes
What is a Mediterranean diet ? It is a diet in which olive oil is used for cooking, where there is a lot of focus on fruits, fish, nuts, and used by people who live around the Mediterranean sea. For quite some time now, such a diet has been stated to be very good for health, it is low in carbohydrate, and has been shown to help against cancer in the past.
Now, recent research shows that such a diet helps in the fight against diabetes, ensuring that people with diabetes lose weight more easily than even those people on a low fat diet, and were also able to avoid taking medicines for blood sugar for longer (link to article):
Compared to people on a low-fat diet, those with type 2 diabetes who ate a Mediterranean diet lost more weight and went longer without blood-sugar-lowering medication, according to a study published this week in Annals of Internal Medicine. "A Mediterranean diet isn't a magic diet, but it has a lot of features that we know are generally healthful," said Dr. Richard Hellman, an endocrinologist and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Missouri -- Kansas City School of Medicine, who was not involved in the research.
A Mediterranean diet includes vegetables, whole grains, fish, poultry, and healthy fats, such as olive oil. In the study, women on the diet were allowed 1,500 calories per day, and men were allowed 1,800 calories per day; no more than 50 percent of calories could come from carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are found in fruit, pasta, and other healthy (and unhealthy) foods, and are largely responsible for the rise in blood sugar after eating. People with type 2 diabetes can sometimes keep their blood sugar in a healthy range by watching their carbohydrate intake.
Being able to keep your diabetes under check through diet and exercise is something that every diabtes afflicted person would really desire, so if it means diet control, that should be an option that people should be willing to consider.

Diabetes research: Blueberry shows promise in fight against obesity and diabetes
In today's world, both obesity and diabetes are affecting an increasing number of people, and those numbers don't look likely to decrease anytime soon. With more automation, less manual work, and less time for meaningful exercise, it is far more likely for people to develop these lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and other related problems. What is the solution once you contract diabetes ? You need to get into sugar control, more exercise, and having to constantly watch what you are eating.
At the same time, there is a constant search to find chemicals (both natural and artifical) that work to reduce this high sugar levels in the blood, and one promising food items that works in this manner is blueberries (link to article):
Montreal researchers have found a way to use fermented blueberry juice for weight loss. The scientists used bacteria from the skin of the blueberry to transform it biologically into what they call a “promising anti-obesity and anti-diabetic” juice. "Biotransformed blueberry juice may represent a novel therapeutic agent, since it decreases hyperglycemia in diabetic mice and can protect young pre-diabetic mice from developing obesity and diabetes. The fermented blueberry juice could be beneficial for weight loss and for diabetes treatment. The juice was found to lower glycemic levels in mice in just three days.
The researchers used the bacteria Serratia vaccinii to transform the blueberry juice, finding that increasing the antioxidant powers with the bacteria provided strong anti-obesity and anti-diabetic properties. The blueberry juice used in the study was compared to regular blueberry juice to find the potential for treating obesity and diabetes.
In the absence of a more structured program in society to reduce obesity, increase the amount of exercise and be more informed about how to avoid diabetes, it is necessary to find items that are useful in bringing blood suagr levels under control and keep the affliction under control.

Article: Whole grains can give health benefits, countering diabetes and cancer
As part of a healthy diet, it has always been recommended to have whole grain as part of the dite. Remember when you pop off to get some bread, and the whole grain bread is advertised as the more healthy one, the type that is more beneficial to your health. You already know that, but here is some advice in the form of a study that recommends having more of whole grain, since it helps against both diabetes and cancer (link to article):
“Research shows that whole grains are good for your heart, lower risk of diabetes and stroke, and may help prevent certain cancers. They also help in managing weight,” she said. Sandon said that whole grains are chock full of good-for-you nutrients including fiber, folate and niacin, vital B vitamins, and magnesium.
She advised that people should by rule look for the words “Made with whole grain” and “100 percent whole grain” on packages. She gave other going-with-the-grain tips, which include swapping whole wheat breadstuffs for white rolls and breads, using whole wheat bread crumbs for stuffing.
This scientific advice will not be unknown to a number of people, but because whole grain stuff does not taste the same as the more processed stuff (food articles), people do not readily adopt whole grain; another byproduct of this attitude is that whole grain made items are not so readily available.

Foods for losing weight - Link to external article
A lot of us would have heard or read about miracle foods, food that can help you lose weight, or even foods that take more energy to eat than the calories you get from such foods. However, it is difficult to construct a diet from such foods, since there are almost no nutritional values to be derived from a diet heavy in such foods. Celery is one such example. Doctors and nutritional experts always advice losing diet with a well constructed diet that removes high calorific value food items, and instead substitutes them with food items that provide the required balance of food.
Here is an article that touts the advantage of certain food stuffs that you would not have thought would be recommended ways for losing weight; however, there are constant revisions in the matter of food, nutrition, and diet, especially when you are looking for ways to lose weight.
Some of the items in this article (link to article) are interesting in the least - these include steak, eggs, oats (you would not have been surprised at seeing oats in this list), lentils, apples, chiles, yoghurt, Parmesan, Avocado, Olive Oil.
Some of these are items you would have known, such as Yoghurt, Apples, Oats, others are not ones that you would have particularly known. Steak and eggs are particularly ones that you would not have associated in respect of foods that can help you in losing weight.

Boils : Natural Home Remedy
Boil is a localized collection of pus surrounded by inflamed tissue in the skin. It starts off as reddened tender area and over a period of time, the area around it becomes firm and hard. The center of the boil full of pus is soft and is filled with infection fighting white blood cells, bacteria and proteins that eradicate the infection. Finally the pus forms a head, which can be surgically opened or drained out through the surface of the skin. One can not pinpoint the reason for the occurrence of boils. They can be caused by ingrown hair, any splinter or foreign object lodged in the skin or clogged sweat glands that become infected to name a few.
What Causes Boils ?
The main cause of this painful disease is growth of staphylococcus germs. These germs enter into the body through sweat glands. Another reason for boils is increase in level of toxic substance in blood. This can be due to improper bowel movement, unhealthy food style, excess alcohol consumption, or due to some chronic diseases.
What are the symptoms of boils ?
The main symptom of boils is small red balls appear on the skin. Slowly, these red balls become big with a small mouth at the center, where puss accumulates. With the passage of time these balls become stiff, and the surrounded area also become hard and red. Patient may also suffer from fever because of severe pain.
Natural Home Remedies For Boils :
- Garlic and Onion : The juice of garlic or onion may be applied externally on boils to help ripen them, break them, and evacuate the pus.
- Bitter Gourd : A cupful of fresh juice of this vegetable, mixed with a teaspoon of lime juice, should be taken, sip by sip, on an empty stomach daily for a few months to treat this condition.
- Sandalwood paste : Sandal is good in softening the skin and it also provides much needed coolness.
- Milk Cream : One teaspoon of milk cream, mixed with half a teaspoon of vinegar, and a pinch of turmeric powder, makes an excellent poultice.
- Betel Leaves : A leaf is gently warmed till it becomes soft. It is then coated with a layer of castor oil. The oiled leaf should be spread over the inflamed part. It should be replaced every few hours. After a few applications, the boil will rupture, draining out all the purulent matter.
- Cumin Seeds : The seeds should be ground in water and made into a paste. This paste can be applied to boils with beneficial results.
- Margosa Leaves : They can be used as a poultice, decoction, or liniment with beneficial results. To make the decoction, 15 gm of margosa leaves should be boiled in 500 ml of water till it is reduced by one-third.
- Bread : On boiling water, put a piece of regular bread. Remove it when it is soft. Apply it to the boil on a temperature tolerable to the skin. This will bring out the head of the boil faster.
- Carrot and wheat germ : On a 1 tbsp of wheat germ oil, mix a grated raw carrot and apply it on the affected area.
- Honey : There are several ways to prepare honey as a home remedy for boil. One is to mix honey with oil. Two is to soak in to honey fresh figs. Three is to combine wheat germ and honey. And four is plain warm honey. Apply one of these on the affected area and the boil will come to its head.
- Herbs : Wild pansy, catnip, dock, chickweed, burdock, or yarrow. The leaves of these herbs are effective healing treatment for boil. Soften any of these leaves by steaming. Make sure you get it from clean source. Apply it on the boil.
Are Boils Contagious?
Yes, boils and carbuncles are contagious. The pus that drains when a boil opens can contaminate nearby skin, causing new boils to occur, or can enter the bloodstream and may cause other body parts also to infect. A carbuncle is a cluster of boils that occurs when the infection spreads and other boils are formed. The formation of a carbuncle may be an indication of immune depression.
DIETARY CONSIDERATIONS :
Balanced diet is very important to keep your body healthy and disease free. Patient suffering from boils should take special care about their diet. Patient suffering from boils should stay on orange juice for 7-8 days. During this period they should only take diluted orange juice 4-5 times a day. Once this orange-juice diet is over, they should be given green leafy vegetables, fresh juicy fruits, cereals, grams, etc. Patient however, should stay away from fried, oily junk foods and sweets and chocolates. They should not take caffeine and hard or soft drinks as well.

Cancer Research: Vitamin D protects against cancer
If you meet any doctor or nutrionist, they will always advise to have a balanced diet that ensures that the body gets enough of what it wants, such as proteins, carbohydrates, calcium, vitamins, etc. Vitamin D is one nutrient that is typically made with exposure of the skin to sunlight, something that has got reduced nowadays due to increasing tendency to spend time either indoors, or under air-conditioned protection, away from the sun. Now, researches have found out that providing proper dosage of Vitamin D could reduce the incidence of bowel and breast cancer (link to article):
Taking supplements of vitamin D could reduce the incidence of breast cancer by a quarter and bowel cancer by a third, What’s more, the vitamin, sometimes called "bottled sunshine", should be offered to the population as part of a public health drive, the boffins suggested.
Vitamin D, made by the action of sunlight on the skin, has attracted increasing attention in recent years as its role in preventing cancer and other conditions including heart disease, diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

Research: Taking Vitamin C with insulin stops blood vessel damage
For people with Type 1 diabetes with a history of poor glucose control, there is a very high chance of complications caused due to damage to blood vessels. These complications occur if the patients is suffering from a cardiovascular disease, or from diabetes. If this damage happens, some of the additional health problems include heart disease, reduced circulation, and amputation, kidney disease and diabetic retinopathy. In new research, it was found that taking Vitamin C with insulin can stop this blood vessel damage (link to article):
While neither therapy produced desired results when used alone, the combination of insulin to control blood sugar together with the use of Vitamin C, stopped blood vessel damage caused by the disease in patients with poor glucose control, said researchers.
nsulin and many other drugs have long been used to control blood sugar, but Ihnat - in an earlier project with scientists in Italy and Hungary - found that cells have a "memory" that causes damage to continue even when blood sugar is controlled. By adding antioxidants like Vitamin C, Ihnat found that cell "memory" disappeared and cell function and oxidation stress were normalized. "For patients with diabetes, this means simply getting their glucose under control is not enough. An antioxidant-based therapy combined with glucose control will give patients more of an advantage and lessen the chance of complications with diabetes," the expert added.
Of course, since this is research, and not yet a proven and stated scientific theory, this means that you cannot take this as treatment. However, if you are not getting enough Vitamin C in your diet, there is no problem with adding more Vitamin C.

Need To Gain Weight ?
While most people have problems losing weight and combating obesity, a great number of people also want to gain weight. Physical illnesses can result in excessive weight loss. Eating disorders can result in massive weight loss and can, in fact, result in death from the lack of nutrition. Many elderly people have trouble preparing foods and are prone to excess weight loss as well.
8 simple steps that could help you gaining weight are :
- Track calories : In order to gain weight, you need to consume more calories than you are currently taking in every day. Once you know how many calories you need to aim for each day, use a food diary to track your daily intake. A food diary will help you track your calorie intake and help remind you when it is time to eat and help you be sure.
- Set a Goal Weight.
- Eat Every 3 Hours.
- Eat Calorie Dense Foods :
* Pasta :100g pasta is 380kcal and easier to ingest than 100g rice. Whole grain pasta is healthier, but takes longer to digest. Eat white pasta.
* Whole Milk: If you don’t bother gaining some fat, drink 1 gallon whole milk per day on top of your current food intake. I’ve seen guys gaining 60lbs/year drinking 1 gallon per milk per day while Squatting 3x/week.
* Nuts: Mixed nuts & natural peanut butter have +500kcal/100g, about 50% healthy fats and 25% protein. Use mixed nuts as snack & throw peanut butter on sandwiches for work/school.
* Olive Oil: Protects against heart diseases & cancer.
- Get Stronger. You want to go from skinny to muscular, not from skinny to chubby. Get into strength training. More strength is more muscle.
- Eat Protein. You need 1g protein per pound of body-weight per day to build & maintain muscle. If you weigh 150lbs/68kg, that’s 150g protein per day. Eat whole protein with each meal. Sources of protein: Red meat, Poultry, Fish, Eggs, Dairy.
- Plan. Failing to plan is planning to fail. You don’t have time to cook 3x/day, and the food at work/school is often low quality/more expensive. Prepare your food in advance and take it with you.
- Track Progress. Success breeds success. Knowing that you’re losing your skinny look will keep you motivated. Track everything.

Research: Strangely, fruits and vegetables increases chances of colon cancer in smokers
A diet heavy in fruits and vegetables has always been recommended. Fruits and vegetables, if increased as a proportion of overall diet, is always helpful. Consumption of fruits and vegetables replaces other unhealthy items in the overall diet such as fried items or junk food. Increased consumption of fruits and vegetables is also useful in the fight against cancer. However, surprisingly, there is one category where an increased consumption of fruits and vegetables actually increases the risk of colon cancer, among smokers (link to article):
A high intake of fruit and vegetables appeared to reduce the risk among non-smokers but seemed to have the reverse effect on smokers, findings by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) showed. “People who eat 600 grammes or more vegetables and fruit a day appear to have a 20 to 25% lower chance of developing colon cancer than people who eat 220 grammes or less,” said the statement.
“For smokers, the consumption of vegetables and fruit appears, on the contrary, to increase the chances of colon cancer. Protection against colon cancer through the consumption of vegetables and fruit therefore appears to depend on smoking habits.” Colon cancer is the second-most common form of the disease in the Netherlands, after breast cancer, with 11,000 new cases diagnosed every year.
This was a surprising piece of information, and the conclusions from such a study is not reduce the consumption of fruits or vegetables, but to stop smoking.

Research: Burnt meat and link with pancreatic cancer
Eating well done meat, done on a barbecue or a grill or deep friend, is an essential part of the eating habits of many cultures, and can be very tasty. The whole experience of sitting with friends and family and enjoying food off a barbecue or a grill is important to the image of an American suburban family, and well embellished through movies and popular culture. However, research has emerged that links the dangerous pancreatic form of cancer to the practise of almost burning food while cooking it (baking or forming it in a stew does not have the same reaction). Link to article:
According to Kristin Anderson, Ph.D., associate professor at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, the finding is linked to consumption of well and very well done meats cooked by frying, grilling or barbecuing. Cooking in this way can form carcinogens, which do not form when meat is baked or stewed. Over the course of nine years, researchers identified 208 cases of pancreatic cancer. Preferences for high temperature cooked meat were generally linked with an increased risk; subjects who preferred very well done steak were almost 60 percent as likely to get pancreatic cancer as compared to those who ate steak less well done or did not eat steak.
"However, those who enjoy either fried or barbecued meat should consider turning down the heat or cutting off burned portions when it's finished; cook meat sufficiently to kill bacteria without excess charring. In addition, the precursors of cancer-causing compounds can be reduced by microwaving the meat for a few minutes and pouring off the juices before cooking it on the grill,” the expert added.
As like other research, the research does not conclusively link these methods of cooking to getting pancreatic cancer, however, there is no harm in slightly modifying the cooking habits in order to decrease the risk.

Study: Walnuts reduce the risk of cancer
Walnuts are supposed to be among the safer nuts to eat. They are suppose to contain Omega-3 fatty acids, supposed to be good for cholestoral, and for the heart. This is of course in comparison to the other type of nuts that are generally more sought after, such as salted peanuts, salted almonds, pistachios, and a few others. Well, here is a study that links the consumption of walnuts to a reduced risk of contracting breast cancer. Keep in mind that the study was done on laboratory animals, and not on humans, in general, walnuts are better as a quick snack rather than eating fatty or fried stuff (and if the cancer stuff works out to be true, what is the harm?). "We know that a healthy diet overall prevents all manner of chronic diseases,” the expert added. To reach the conclusion, researchers studied mice that were fed a diet that they estimated was the human equivalent of two ounces of walnuts per day. A separate group of mice were fed a control diet. Standard testing showed that walnut consumption significantly decreased breast tumor incidence, the number of glands with a tumor and tumor size.
Molecular analysis showed that increased consumption of omega-3 fatty acids
contributed to the decline in tumor incidence, but other parts of the walnut contributed as well.
To have absolutely proof, one would need to wait for more research in this area; however for women who would like to take the chance on reducing their risk levels for breast cancer, there is nothing wrong in making a small amount of walnuts as a part of a regular diet.
